Globe Tower Collaborate To Expand 4G and 5G Coverage
Phil-Tower Consortium, Inc. (PhilTower) and Miescor Infrastructure Development Corporation (MIDC) joined forces to address the rising need for infrastructure backing up 4G and 5G networks in the Philippines. Globe Tower Collaborate To Expand 4G and 5G Coverage.
They signed a deal to buy tower assets from Globe Telecom, a local mobile company. PhilTower paid 20 billion Philippine pesos for 1350 towers (around US$357.36 million), and MIDC paid 26 billion pesos for 2180 towers (about $464.57 million).
Meralco, MIDC’s parent company, announced in a stock market statement that the joint venture aims to expand mobile network coverage and boost investment in Philippine digital infrastructure.
The partnership is set to help the Philippines handle its increasing need for better connections.
Meralco mentioned that “PhilTower, MIDC, and other tower companies are expanding fast in the Philippines. They can use their different locations to offer better connections to customers.”
PhilTower manages over 1,250 towers in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, while MIDC handles a similar number mainly in Luzon.
Both companies said this announcement follows a great year for the Philippine tech industry, with investments topping $1.7 billion (PHP96.16 billion).
The Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission and the Philippine Competition Commission are looking into the partnership between PhilTower and MIDC.
Globe Telecom announced they sold 100 telecom towers to PhilTower for PHP1.5 billion (around USD26.80 million).
This sale is part of a deal signed in September 2022, covering 1,350 towers and other infrastructure valued at PHP20 billion (approximately $357.36 million).
These sales support the Philippine Government’s tower-sharing initiative, helping operators expand coverage without building more infrastructure.
According to a study from 2022 cited by Philippine Daily Inquirer’s local media, tower-sharing could help telecommunications companies save up to $1.15bn in capital and operation expenditures between 2025 and 2050. According to this study conducted by Edotco Group and management consulting firm Roland Berger in collaboration, individual tower sites may incur costs of $75,000 to $100,000. Equipment expenses might range between $15,000 and $40,000. Additionally, annual operating costs for each tower are expected to be between $9,000-$11,000
